Daily Rhythm

At The Cottage, we embrace the power of a daily rhythm, inspired by the Waldorf Method. This carefully crafted framework alternates between periods of concentration and expansion, striking a balance between focused engagement and exploratory play. With a steady rhythm that remains unchanged each day, children find comfort and security, knowing exactly what to expect. However, unlike a rigid routine, our daily rhythm is imbued with flexibility. We respond to the unique needs of our children, allowing the day's activities to flow seamlessly and peacefully. This intentional approach of a daily rhythm nurtures a sense of stability, creativity, and purpose, creating an enriching environment where children thrive.

What and How We Teach

Language

Books, poems, songs, and stories are thoughtfully chosen to align with our lessons and nature experiences. Many of these will be incorporated into our routine daily. We also use narration, where children orally retell information, as means to internalize and comprehend the material. This practice helps with retention, improved language skills, organizing of thoughts, and higher interest of the material overall.

Play

Here at The Cottage, play takes center stage. We recognize its profound influence on child development, as it strengthens vital skills and qualities such as imagination, cooperation, and friendship. We encourage imaginative and unstructured play, providing natural play materials, and embracing play as a powerful form of learning. Each day begins and ends with free play, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring that our children experience the wonder and delight of play throughout their time with us.

Movement

In addition to child-led play and outdoor exploration, children are instructed in daily "Guided Movement." This includes learning new sports, how to stretch, or a new dance. Movement plays a crucial role in enhancing coordination, balance, spatial awareness, and overall well-being, supporting the holistic development of each child.

Music

Each day, as part of circle time, children engage with an array of musical elements, including instruments, rhythm, and melody. Music of various genres will also play quietly, at appropriate times throughout the day, as a gentle backdrop while children work and play.

Lesson

Midway through the day children receive an engaging hands-on activity that simulates real-world tasks like cooking, baking, cleaning, or gardening. These lessons center on nurturing positive character traits, enhancing fine motor skills, and cultivating a sense of responsibility and self-confidence. To ensure active participation and enjoyment, we keep lessons short and enjoyable, allowing children to stay fully engaged and relish the learning experience.

Art

Art is essential for children's development, promoting self-expression and creativity. That is why we incorporate artwork into our lessons. At The Cottage we emphasize: -Process over Product: Valuing individual expression during art-making. -Rhythm and Repetition: Building confidence through repetitive activities. -Respect for Individual Development: Adapting lessons to each child's abilities and stage of development.
